A concept circle is a technique that helps students get a general sense of the conceptual relationships among key vocabulary terms in a reading or a unit. Three key ways to conduct a Concept Circle activity are:

l Put words or phrases in each quadrant of a Concept Circle and tell students to describe or name the concept relationship among the quadrants.

l Direct students to shade the quadrant of a Concept Circle containing a word or phrase that does not relate to the terms in the other quadrants. Have students identify the concept relationships that exist among the remaining quadrants.

Leave one quadrant of a Concept Circle empty. Have students fill in the empty quadrant with a word or phrase that relates to the terms in the other three quadrants. Have students identify the overarching concept the circle depicts.
